Can you look at my CV?

I get asked this question so many times, pretty much every day and for those days that I haven’t been asked it, it’s usually because I’ve not managed to get around to reading all my emails and LinkedIn messages. And if I could give everyone advice, I would. And I actually do, I’ve just written a document which is out there for everyone to see, a list of 22 things that I would really recommend with your CV.  I really do enjoy helping people, giving guidance, talking through their past experiences, what they’ve achieved, why they’re looking for a new job etc etc. But before I do say anything, let’s do the maths. 3 – 5 people a day ask for advice. If I’m going to do a proper job, look through their CV, chat to them, critique it and then review changes that are made, that’s possibly 30 – 60 minutes of my day. 5 days a week that’s 7.5 – 12.5 hours a week of free advice. Oh heck, that’s a lot. Don’t get me wrong, if I am working on a job that they have applied for, we’ll work together but if this is a speculative enquiry, I could spend my entire day helping people.

I was chatting to my Dad about something the other day and he said “Oh you’re not the muppet I sometimes think you are” which really offended me to start off with. Then I remembered I can be super sensitive and sometimes he’s at the other end of the sensitive scale, coupled with he’s from the North where sarcasm is the main language and then I chuckled. Parents forget that their children become adults. We sometimes even forget that we become adults. There is so much out there about “Imposter Syndrome” and the majority of us suffer from it. But here is what I have learnt. I am not a Muppet when it comes to Recruitment, either candidate or client side. And I am certainly not an Imposter. And I’m not arrogant about it either but I know what I’m doing. How do I know? Apart from the fact I’ve been doing it for years, I’ve been a candidate, I’ve been a client, I run my own business but more importantly, I’ve got a selection of recommendations that people have written after I’ve helped them. Proof is in the pudding and I love pudding!

So, when you go to expert and want some advice, who do you pick? The person who knows what they’re doing? The person who has a skill that you need? When you want legal advice you ask the professional, not a mate. So you get all this knowledge and you can then make changes and move forward with complete confidence. And I can help you with that. But because I’m not a muppet, I can’t give up a day a week for free. I have to value my own skills as much as you value yours. And I have two little kitties who need feeding as well as a mortgage that needs paying. So, I have a one page summary which gives you a steer which you can have for free. It will give you a steppingstone to moving forward. But you can also book in some time with me, a phone call, Zoom call or Skype, whichever you prefer. 1 hour to get your CV spot on, for a reduced price of £99.00 as I understand that times are tough at the moment. I don’t underestimate that people looking for a new job can be low, vulnerable, fed up, unemployed, whatever the circumstances, I want to help. And for £49.00 I can review your LinkedIn profile. 70% of my candidates come through me finding them on LinkedIn so don’t understand the power of LinkedIn.

However, I can’t find you the job. I can’t make one appear if it isn’t there. Because the market is incredibly tough at the moment; the toughest it’s been for a long time. Is it going to get easier? I have no idea but I can promise that I will get you as ready as you can be so when the perfect job comes up, a recruiter either finds you on LinkedIn or your CV stands out from the hundreds of other CV’s they received. And it’ll stand out for the right reasons as I’ve read too many that stand out for the wrong reasons!

So, if I can help you, please get in touch. And if you can’t afford this at the moment, do not worry. I give lots of tips and advise on LinkedIn and on my website. Watch YouTube videos of people giving advice and piece it together yourself. You probably know more than you realise. You just might have had a knock to the confidence. But whatever you do (and I always say this) your CV is your story, only make changes that you’re comfortable with. Be yourself, be truthful, honest, and remember, fortune favours the brave.
